Icons of Mid-Century Design

Updated: Mar 31

Celebrating the visionaries who shaped 20th-century interiors.

Hans J. Wegner: Master of Danish Modern

Few names are as synonymous with mid-century design as Hans J. Wegner. Often referred to as the master of the chair, Wegner was responsible for over 500 designs across his lifetime, many of which remain icons of modern design today. Early Life

Born in 1914 in Tønder, a small town in southern Denmark, Wegner began his journey in design as a teenage apprentice to a local cabinetmaker. This early hands-on experience shaped his deep respect for materials and craftsmanship, instilling in him principles that would define his work for decades to come.

After formal training at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, he worked alongside architects such as Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller, before launching his own studio in 1943. It was here that Wegner’s vision truly came into its own; a blend of sculptural form, practical simplicity, and profound attention to detail.

Design Philosophy: Simplicity Meets Sophistication

Wegner believed that furniture should be both beautiful and functional, with every detail serving a purpose. He approached each piece with an artisan’s eye, stripping away excess to reveal pure, timeless forms. His iconic chair designs often feel sculptural, yet they were always built with comfort and everyday use in mind. He often spoke of designing chairs as if they were characters with their own personality. His work reflects a distinctly human approach to design — thoughtful, ergonomic, and emotionally resonant.

The CH24 “Wishbone” Chair

Among Wegner’s most recognised creations is the CH24 chair, often referred to as the Wishbone Chair. Designed in 1949 and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn, this chair combines natural materials with effortless elegance. The delicate Y-shaped backrest, paper cord seat, and soft curves demonstrate Wegner’s mastery of form and proportion.

The CH22 Lounge Chair

Wegner’s CH22 lounge chair, also designed in 1950 for Carl Hansen & Søn, showcases a more relaxed silhouette with low, angular arms and a wide seat. It’s a chair that invites you to sit back — while still making a striking statement in any room.

A Legacy of Timeless Design

Today, Wegner’s work is more relevant than ever. As design trends continue to embrace sustainability, craftsmanship, and longevity, his furniture stands as a benchmark for thoughtful, enduring design. Whether you're a collector, a design lover, or simply looking for timeless pieces, investing in a Wegner original is a nod to mid-century heritage and a commitment to lasting quality.
